My mum had birthday some days ago and I'm thinking of printing one of my images on a canvas, frame it and bring it as a present. There are lots of services which offers canvas printing. But: I've never seen any examples of it. Is it sharp enough or does it look more like an oil painting afterwards? Has anyone tried it before?

I did print a photo on canvas and it turned out really nice. Of course the subject matter was crucial I think. The photo was one I took of a old english type of garden with little cherub stautes and such. I don't know whether portraits or some other photos would do well wil it.

Did it look like an oil painting or was it mostly clear like a standard photograph? I know that it gets a little bit blurred on canvas, but I cannot say if I'd find it acceptable to order such a picture... Do you have some picture of it? Heh Heh Heh, taking a picture from a canvas which has been some photo...:)

uwp, I have also printed old english type photos onto canvas and I agree with skoenlaper that the subject matter would be a factor. I was extremely happy with the result and it did look like an oil painting. But I think if I can get a pleasing result by doing it at home, I would think a professional print company would do an even better job.

Hi uwp - Canvas prints are going to be slightly less sharp than standard photo prints, but then they're meant to be viewed from a distance rather than close up. I've had a couple of wedding photos (portraits) printed onto canvas and they've come out well. They were all presents though, so I can't upload any photos I'm afraid! Remember that most canvas printing companies will frame the canvas for you as well. The thicker the frame, the better. If you're in the UK, you could try a company called Photobloc - http://www.photobloc.com - who I use regularly.

I've done some pics as canvas. They look great but the emphasis has to be on paying for quality as it is possible to get cheap treatments that don't last or just look awful.

Have to agree with "Biggles"... there are some companies that do it very very well... such as http://www.photoartistry.co.uk/... and there are others that do it very very badly. The good ones tend to cost more...

My advice is always ask about the weight of the canvas and whether it is synthetic or cotton.
A good benchmark is 350gsm and say a gallery wrap of 3x3.8cm.
Most companies offer this but the most important thing is to try and get a proof before you allow them to print. I would have no hesitation in recommending http://canvastown.com

OK, there has been a few recommendations, but none has really been very detailed about why they would recommend those companies. The following is why I would recommend http://www.mcanvasprints.co.uk/ (all info from the website, except last one which is based on personal experience)

- 12 Colour HP Vivera pigment based system (colour fastness of 200 years according to HP).
- They use a 300gsm 100% cotton canvas for minimum loss of detail (higher weight would lead to a more heavily textured surface).
- They use stretcher bars made of the finest quality kiln dried fir wood.
- All canvas prints have a special protective coating.
- Your canvas print will arrive ready to hang on your wall with specially designed canvas hangers.
- Prices from £25.
- No extra delivery charge for additional prints, regardless of how many you order.
- Speedy and friendly reply to my many emailed questions.

I print my own images on canvas up tp A3+, i use a HP Photosmart Pro B9180 printer and Vivera Pigment inks.
results are wonderful, but canvas & ink cost alot,a box of 25 HP canvas A3+ is £60 and to replace all eight inks is over £150.
