I am an amateur who enjoys photography very much and very keen to learn more to improve my shots, Now I have a small 8 MP P&S and I'm thinking of upgrading to a DSLR. I am a little confused between two cameras which are within my budget. The Canon 1000D and the Olympus E-420, I have read a little about SLRs and I don't know much till now. Apparently the Canon is a great gear but I once read that Canons and Nikons don't Install Image stabilizers in the camera body, they put it instead in the lenses which are less than 200 mm focal length, so does that mean that it would be hard to take shots with prime, wide angle, macro,or low zoom telephoto lenses(

The need for the stabilization is going to be more or less dependent on what you will be shooting.

As far as the need for IS or VR goes for the manufacturers you listed, there are many times more lens both with and w/out stabilization for Canon and Nikon than any other brand(s).

The "average" stabilization is going to give you 3-4 stops of exposure or speed (ISO speed or F-stops). I would make a choice based on many factors, this being one of the less important ones.

Check neutral reviews (http://tinyurl.com/yak2bgk) and most importantly, hold the camera and play with it. How it "feels" is probably the single most important item for making a decision.
