Bringing Camera to 4 Day Festival

I'm going to be going to a 4 day festival later this month and don't plan on leaving much if I can help it. I'd like to bring my camera with me, but I'm wondering how best to keep it protected. I'll probably be keeping it in a large plastic bag when it's not in use, so that it doesn't get wet if it should rain (and it always does at least once during this festival). But I'm wondering about heat/cold exposure. I could keep it in my car, which will be with me. The trunk would be cooler than the rest of the car if it's hot out, but the way the summer's been so far, it might get pretty cold.

Anyone have suggestions?

as long as it's not outside the parameters of the temps for the camera it won't be a problem.

Check the specs in the manual or in the web, there will be both ambient and operating temps listed. I find it hard to believe anywhere in NY state will be below freezing even for a short time this time of the year, but that will still probably fall within the "storage" limits. I suspect that the heat will be a bigger issue.

I disagree with the heat issue - if paint color is black (or any dark color) trunk temp will not be appreciatively cooler. Is there a reason why you wouldn't have the camera with you all the time? I'm not feeling particularly creative right now but I have a tough time thinking of ANY place I would be that my camera wouldn't be with me.

Get a waist hanging camera bag. I've got one by Lowe Pro mountain gear, it's SLR sized and has two pods for lenses/ cards/ film.

That way you can wear it all the time and your gear is safe.

Is it a music festival? In which case are there any good bands on?

Whatever we want to see loads of pics here on FT.

Regards,

Ralph

i don't know, it just seemed to me like the trunk would be a bit cooler since it's darker and seperated from the rest of the car by a seat, and doesn't allow sunlight in (which would be amplified by windows). don't know if that's at all true, but it seems logical in my head.

as to why i wouldn't have it on my person all the time: it's a 4 day festival and i don't like to carry my camera unless i'm shooting. especially if i wind up at one of the stages where there are a lot of people dancing in close proximity. plus, without fail, it generally rains hard at least one of the days of this festival each year. parking is off-site (not in walking distance, shuttles running every 5-10 minutes), but the tent i'll be staying in will be on-site. and while not very common, people have had things stolen from their tents. there's also the fact that i might be inebriated during parts of the festival since it is a 4-day thing and as responsible as i'm capable of being while inebriated, i like to be able to cut loose.

it is a music festival. Grassroots Festival, it's a big thing here each year. i'm not into most of the music, i tend to go for the social aspects. there are a lot of styles of music, but it's mostly zydeco and things of that nature, which i'm not into. the 2 acts i was looking forward to aren't returning this year (Blackfire and MC Lars), but there are some i haven't heard of before that sound interesting.

The whole of the car is just a metal box, as such there will be a transfer of heat into the trunk also.... think about it...in hot sunlight you could fry an egg on the metal !!!
If you really read the manual for most cameras they tell you not to leave the camera in the car....not even in the glove-box!

There was a recent test looking at how hot it gets in a car, and on a hot British day the temp got up to 60+ degrees C, thats not healthy for a camera.

My average temp on a sunny hot day in St Louis is 145F (63C). I have measured it with 2 different types of thermometers with a +/- 2F difference.

Since I no longer drink, I didn't take into account the potential for impaired judgment. In regards to the tent - you could always tie the strap of your camera (or bag) around your ankle under your sleeping bag. Unless you sleep sounder than I do - any attempt to dislodge it would wake you (plus they would have to know what the bulge under you sleeping bag was). Hmmm maybe a bigger concern would be people peeking under your sleeping bag. :-))

I certainly understand wanting to "cut loose" - and even with a backpack bag - dancing would uncomfortable. I was thinking strictly from a - wow what a chance to get a bunch of types photos.

People aren't generally that brazen with their stealing. Usually it's just when there's no people in the tents. I'm a pretty sound sleeper, but the zip/unzip of a tent is usually enough to wake me up. At least long enough to see who's coming or going before zonking out again. And if anyone tries to get that bold in a thieving attempt, they can have a conversation with mr. knife. :p

Oh, I'd probably be shooting a decent amount during the day, but there may be times I don't feel like it. And I probably won't be carrying it at night since that's when there seems to be more energy, dancing, getting wild, etc. that I like to partake in. :)

But I also tend to sleep in, which is where the heat concern comes in. Maybe I can drop it at a friend's house when I don't feel like carrying it. I'll figure something out one way or the other.

No, no. I posted some more recently than that, but I think I took a bunch of them down when there was all that drama over some google BS.

I'll try to post some from the festival. I'm just hesitant to post my better work here, at least until I've got my own website up and running. Which is something I'm trying to figure out the logistics of.

Didn't end up taking pictures. I wanted to participate more in the festivities this year and it would have been hard to do both. Plus the weather on the days I would have wanted to take pictures was off-and-on rainy.

I do, but I have to be in a "I'm gonna go out and take pictures" mood. It's been rainy here most of the summer so far, so I'm shooting less than usual. And trying to get back in the habit is hard. Point and shoots are more convenient for taking pictures wherever, whenever. But my P-&-S takes AA batteries, rather than having its own rechargable one, which is quite unuseful.

Eh, wasn't too much to get pictures of this year. Except maybe the fire-dancers. I wish I'd had a camera for that.

Yeah, I know. Excuses, excuses.
