I just purchased a spare battery( EN-EL3E )but with no Nikon brand name) for my D-90 from Amazon,
but it doesn't want to charge up. I noticed written on the battery, "designated charger only ".
I have a Nikon quick charger MH-18a, could it be it's not compatible ? Or could the battery be duff ?
Thanks...Jim. :^)

it could be an EL-EN3A , I have had them from 3 suppliers labeled as the E - but they are not compatible with the 18a charger, only the 18 ..

Thank you Megmet, Doody. Good so far. Had to e-mail Star e-shop, got a reply saying, no need to return the battery, they will send me another. :^)

:P lol

I've gotten two of those spare batteries for my D300 that have no name on them. They are charging fine but the charge holding time is definitely poorer than the Nikon brand.

Hope you get it sorted James

Got my money back on that. Just ordered a Nikon brand at twice the price, but still half the shop price. :^)

I'm eagerly awaiting my new Pentax K-7 complete with battery grip which allows for AA lithium-ion batteries; I am wholly satisfied with using my current Pentax *istDS which takes generic 4 AA Lithium-ions...I don't even mess with rechargeables with it and don't really care for the K-7 proprietary battery. I do like the option the battery grip gives me.

They're not very "green", but they sure are convenient when you have the choice!

California has the strictest laws of any state for the disposal of toxic materials, including batteries. That doesn't stop the unscrupulous slobs, however, who dump anything and everything (old TV's, monitors, couches, mattresses, etc.) beside the road at 2am. They're not just convenient, they're long-lasting (1000 shots for a set of 4) and reliable. Being an old Boy Scout, what I pack in, I pack out. I take nothing but pictures and leaving nothing but footprints.

I'll stick to the convenient, long lasting only compared to non-lithium AA's, reliable - eh, I imagine a smaller battery more quickly affected by cold and heat.
My batteries last 3-4000 shots, I carry 2 spares with me all the time and rotate the charging. With the price of lithium's, I don't think my payout would be too long (of course I can't use AA's anyway..:-)

I have three "Hahnel" brand batteries for my D200, one of them is a rogue and charges very flakily, I guess it's just pot luck when you go away from the manufacturer's own gear. Mind youone of the ENEL-3s for my D70 was a bugger too.

Sometimes it's the fault of the charger!
My old one had seen better days so I invested in a new one, it worked fine for the first three times then went on the blink....
I've now gone back to my old charger as it's still reliable after many years of regular use!
