50mm is my choice. The camera store owner reminded me that I really need a 30mm tho due to conversion rate. That 30mm on my medium format non pro camera becomes close to a 50mm

Are you talking about Canon lenses I guess (don't know if there are 3rd party ones for Canon or not)?
I have a 50mm 1.4 (Nikon) and a 105mm 2.8 (Sigma) - the difference is huge. They both have superb glass, which in my opinion is the absolute most important thing.
If you are doing low-light portraits (as opposed to candids) I think the best thing would be to use a decent tripod. :-))

yes i ment canon, and i have tripod!
i really want to know if it was worth upgrading from my canon 50mm 1.8 to 50mm 1.4 or 85mm 1.8 for better portrait pics?
and if they better for outside shots too?
has anyone used both?
thank you

This really depends on your budget and what you are doing the portraits for. The 50mm most closely approximates the dimensions of the human face. If you are shooting professionally - find out if the glass is better in the 1.4. Otherwise, budget and quality not withstanding - I wouldn't do it myself.
If you are doing "posed" portraits - your $ would be better spent on lights and reflectors - you can use them inside or out. With all other things being equal the most important thing to achieving your photo goals is lighting.
Hope that helps.

50mm 1.4EF Lens is as good as the 1.2L lens series. Go for it!
