so...im thinking a d300 from nikon, not really on what canon has, any thoughts?

also for d300 would you recommend just buying the body before the lens or buying the one with the 18-200mm? photos i prefer taking are people and a bit of landscape. should i just get a body if so, which lens should i buy?

I would buy the body only, then add any of several options:
Tamron 18-250mm
Sigma 18-200mm (the one I own - wanted the Tamron but this was both $150 cheaper and available - and I'm very pleased with the quality)
Nikon 18-55 (with or without VR depending on your budget) + 55-200mm (definitely with VR - one of the best buys of any lens!)

As far as the D300 - what can I say? Camera of the year for a number of reasons. New DSLR's are coming out that don't come close to touching what the D300 is capable of - and I'm still learning about mine!
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300.htm - not everybody likes Ken Rockwell - but he does pretty comprehensive reviews
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond300/ - fairly well balanced review site for all things digital

I'm still in love with mine. I have that sigma 18-200 vr. Used it at the winery portrait workshop in Napa all day. Quite pleased with the results.

thanks for the replies..

so no canon recommendations?

i just checked from the site where I was supposed to buy it 2 weeks before my trip but it went up to 2584 (with the 18 - 200 VR). do you think i should still buy it online? i can't find any local stores here in MD, all the ritzcamera stores have closed down a month ago.

do you think they'll be releasing a replacement for the d300 pretty soon?

Canon 50D w/ 18-200 would keep you happy until you want better glass/reach.

Without a budget, it's hard to give a solid suggestion.
