I just saw this - so I'm a little late. If you could give a little more information, like the purpose and object of what the assignment is, what the class is actually about/for (manipulating is not a very specific description) and what you are wanting to achieve - a lot of folks might be able to offer assistance.

I tend to go along with Doody on this.
The best thing you could do right now is to buy a good book on photography and study it.....really study it.
When you've done that read the book that came with your camera....then read it again.
You need to learn how to get your shots in focus before you can go on to photo manipulation, I'm not being unkind here when I say.... I'm yet to see anything from you that is in focus.
Keep on trying but don't be in too much of a hurry......baby steps first! :-)
