Can anyone tell me what camera would be best for my sister to buy ( up to 300.00 dollar range)? She says she wants to get decent shots and be able to zoom in on a horses' eye if she wanted to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

You could take her to the nearest camera store and try out different models.
I find it very hard to give any advice on this cause there are so many that fit the bill in this case.

The one I'm using Nancy is the Canon Powershot SX10 IS, it has a 20x zoom lens. It's not a small compact so won't fit in the pocket but it has a lot going for it.
I don't know the price in dollars but at below £300 it's a good buy, it will probably as is usual be much less in the US.

It usually runs around $399 USD - right now Best Buys has it on sale for $359 USD and they have the Nikon P80 on sale for $315 - or even better the recently announced Nikon P90 for $399 USD - incredible specs:

Thank you Megmet...the Canon Powershot SX10 and the Nikon P80 were the two she was considering...I personally liked the Canon, but she went with the Nikon...I didn't see your message until after learning she had already ordered the Nikon....Thank you for your suggestion ...I'm going to get a Canon SX10 though...cause I feel certain that it needs me : ))

So far I find it to be a great camera, I always liked my S3 IS...but the new camera is better by far, and I am so glad I bought it !

That was/is such a great camera - it's a shame the S5 was such a disappointment.

But with the new SX10 IS they have taken all of the good points of the S3 IS and added lots more features to make this a great camera too !
I'll admit I do still like the S3 better for the super macro shots, as the focus locks on better in auto.. but the quality of the image is better in the SX10.
In fact if I'm honest I actually prefer the old G6 (still have it) for macro shots, the glass in that camera just can't be matched !
