After saving up for months for a Canon 85mm F1.2 USM L ii I was dismayed to see the prices of this lenses had rocketed up. I looked online to see all the prices everywhere, even ebay were now through the roof so I dug a little deeper and saw on numerous websites because of the value of the yen vs dollar vs euro vs pound etc etc Canon and Nikon had announced a 3-5% increase on their camera bodies and lenses. This is fair enough, I thought their profit margins were already huge but :
The lense I was looking at was £985, now it's £1,599.... it's 2nd hand price on ebay is now £300 more than it was new !!!
Am trying to work out how £614 became a 3-5% increase in price ?? Or is it just the UK getting shafted once again ? Has anyone overseas noticed a huge increase in the price of bodies and lenses ?
The only plus side to this is if you have this lense and what to make a huge profit then it's your lucky day ;)
If however you were just trying to save up for it, you're screwed *mumbles*

Yeah - smart plan on vendors's part....

People have less money, so let's jack up the prices so that they can afford it even less :(

Yes David I've noticed it too!

When I bought my new Canon camera three weeks ago from Amazon UK it was up 10% on the price in December.
At the time the pound was virtually one for one against the euro, but if I'd bought it here in Spain it would have cost me an extra £100, which would have made it more than Canons recommended price....so even though it cost more and I'd to pay £19-50 postage,... it was still the best deal for me!

Can't help feeling that photographers are being ripped off big time!

I dont mind them keeping their 3-5% increase.
But UK prices have ALWAYS been a lot higher than the US / Asia prices and now a £614 increase on top of that which sure as hell isnt even close to a 3-5% bracket seems a little off.
I cant understand how they think this would increase their sales in any way.
A piece of glass that doesnt sell because of it's extortionate price increase will make the company absolutely nothing. You'd think the logical thing to do would be to bring the prices down during a recession to cut their losses?

I know Bill - just irks me that UK prices have always been well over the US / Asia ones at the best of times then not a 3-5% but more like a 35% increase kicks in it makes me wonder just how much of a profit they'd be making now....
If they can afford to sell the lense I'm after in Hong Kong for £850 and make a profit, it's hard to buy into the " £1,599 price tag or we'll go bust " baloney.
Recently a lot of shops here went into administration ( Zavvi being the most recent ) and they sold £10 dvd's off for £2 each to try to save their own necks meaning that when they needed to make a sale they reduced the prices, not almost double them.
As frustrated as I am, I always seek both sides of the picture and am trying to find a genuine reason for such a huge increase so I can tell myself these companies arent just being f*^$ing greedy !!!

Since the euro and the pound are worth almost the same, dutch people order lenses and other photography stuff in the UK. Why? Because it's cheaper then over here even with the steep dutch import rates.

Yes that's what bugs me, like I said if I were to have bought my camera here in Spain it would have cost me £100 or a hundred euros more than the UK.
Considering that as David says the UK prices are overly inflated...it looks like all of us here in the euro zone are being taken for mugs!

One reason for the price of lenses going up is the repeated increase in the price of glass, or domestic stuff only it is going up 50% this year alone!!!
