I am buying a printer but I have never had one before I will mainly be using it for family and friends photos as im looking at it been cheaper than a proffessional printing service. Can anyone suggest a printer that will also do larger prints, any info on any printers will help thanks.

I'm using a HP Photosmart 8050 but I don't think it's available anymore, it's kinda old.
The advantage of HP is that the printinghead (where the ink comes through) is in the cartridge, so every time you change the cartridge you have a clean head.
Downside is (but not just with the HP) that new ink is expensive, so shop around.
Mine prints up to A4 size.

I'm using the HP Photosmart C6200.
It's an all in one scanner printer and card reader, it has a viewing screen and can also be used to process and print your photos without a computer.

I've used it for twelve months now and have been highly delighted with it, I've used much more expensive printers from both Canon and Epson in the past and they were nowhere near as good as this one.
A plus side to HP is that ink is widely available, it's reasonably priced and long lasting also.
As has already been said, the print head is in the cartridge, so there is no waste as you don't have to use ink to clean them....with Epson I used more that way than for printing.

I don't know about pricing in the UK, but I have found in the States that pricing for prints (from 4"x6" up to at least 20"x30") I can buy for considerably less than printing at home - not to say that having a printer at home is worthless- I have 2 HP's (have been using HP for 21 years and have never been disappointed or had problems). An at home printer is almost indispensable for the quick print at odd hours or just to see how a shot may looked printed (the screen can be pretty deceptive). Since I can get 1 hour printing (and just send the file over the internet, so no waiting in store or 2 trips) and the color is so consistent I will usually only print at home for the reason(s) listed.

The 4"x6" cost 1/4 to 1/8 as much at a commercial printer (here it could be anything from a Walmart, Walgreens, local camera shop - to online ones such as HP, Shutterfly ect.). I have extensively tested them for color accuracy and fade quality (I left them sitting on the dashboard of the car in the summer - gets about 140F [60C] inside).

I suggest checking potential purchases online for reviews to see what they have to say and also check the user comments -- usually they need to be taken with a grain of salt - but they will give you at least some flavor of what to expect.

Hope that is helpful.
