MATTING AND FRAMING PRINTS

this may sound dumb, but i spent over $300 in fraiming two oil paintings... I suppose matting and fraiming a photo won't be much different?

Is there a "poor-man's" approach to this dilemma?

Also, I read the term "canvas" printing... what is that?

I use COSTCO for my prints because it is convenient, here in California, I don't know if sony or shutterfly have better quality??

Please help!!

Sony Imagestation sadly is no more - they were the very best and sales all the time. I get 80% of mine done at Walgreens - and they are every bit as good as any of the "big name" online developers here in the States. I have tried almost all the big names except MPix (their ads make them sound like the best thing since sliced bread, but their prices are high so I haven't had an interest in tryinng them out), and there is no significant difference between them and [Snapfish, Shutterfly, Kodak etc..]. I've had 6 MP shots blown up to 20x30" by all of them and with no discernable differences.

exactly what it is called - the photo printed on canvas - there have been a couple of threads (I think in this Topic) on canvas printing. I haven't had a reason to do any, and no clients have wanted any so far so I can't speak for the quality/look. (Almost positive that MPix.com does them - I do know that there are several)

As far as mattinng and framing - a somewhat dicey proposition. I thinnk Captivelight (I think it was Miles that said this) said it best when he said that matting and framing are very "personnal" choices - and leaves that to the client unless they really want an end-to-end solution (still risk a chance they will not like your choices on either the mat, the frame or both).

I can tell you what I do for swap meets and small shows. I get a nuber of 8x10" printed and buy the mats and frames at Michaels. The mat is about $1-3 and they have an imported frame that is awesome - it's sized for a mat, and uses inexpensive steel push spring clips to hold the back up against the glass. So - glass, small edged black frame, horizontal or vertical hanging - and the best part - a pack of 2 is $6!!!! For the mats I buy a singe (not museum mount double) depth in either Ivory or white - Michaels always has them in stock, and they make a great neutral compliment to the black rimmed frame.

Hope that helps.
