A painter and decorator from Ceredigion (UK) has been fined £30 for smoking in his own van.
He was approached by council officials and told because it was his place of work he was breaking the law.He says he was dumbfounded and he was only popping down to the shops in his van....:-))

This is so true I work for a local council, my job involves me going to people in their own homes. We are not allowed to smoke in our own cars going from one home to the next as it is classed as smoking in work time. It is that serious they can discipline you for it. I gave up smoking last year but think it is a really stupid rule.

It was the same when I worked for the council before I moved to Spain. Even though I personally don't smoke I still think it's a stupid rule.
We also were not allowed by the council to give a lift to anyone in our own car.....how bad is that?

If you work from home you are breaking the law by smoking in YOUR OWN home.

Yup Laura. California is one of them. I think that's a good law though. Pretty sad when a car pulls up in front of school and the kids open the doors to exit ans smoke billows out!
And interesting question stu

I wonder how the no-smoking in the workplace effects the companies that carry out tests on dogs & chimps that are forced to chain smoke..........
Do they have to go outside if they want to smoke ?

That is the very reason we left !
Here in southern Spain if they don't like the no smoking rule they just ignore it, what's more the government here has given them the option to do just that if a bar or restaurant is under a certain size.
We are also much more free in other areas too, we don't get the feeling that big brother is looking over our shoulder all the time, it's not the nanny state that the UK has now become.

i agree with you crunch. i have been here all my life . and i think the government is absolute rubbish . none of them know what the other is doing . and there have been more mistakes made than i have had hot dinners .. i myself am trying to stop smoking . but i feel for people when hey have used the public houses probably all their lives , and find they now have to stand outside in all weathers , to have a smoke ..... scandelous . no shelters most time s niether. thats gratitude for your custom ... i do agree to smiking areas away from children but all the pubs are mostly empty now .. people are drinking at home . because it is not as expensive and you can smoke to your hearts content .. the pubs are getting boring they have lost the atmosphere .
