Hello everyone :) I'm one again calling on your expertise. I'm currently taking photos of a little toddler (about 2 and half years old). He's fascinated by my camera, especially when my flash pops up, so that's a good distraction technique to take photos of him. Trouble is, I'm having trouble getting some really good photos of him. Unfortunately his Mum didn't give me permission to show other people the photos of him so I can't visablly show you how far I've got (which is fair enough - he's her son, and I need the practice). I've got a few good shots where the light falls on one side of his face and he is sort of gazing at the camera. Any tips for me in taking a good photo of him? He's a fast mover, and can get bored of the camera (that's all to do with the time of day I photgraph him tbh). I tried him on a white background, but obv he walks around so not too useful!
I know I should get down on to his level to get the best photos. I'm currently just using my portrait mode on my camera (I have a canon 350d). I did venture into a manual mode, where I changed the ISO speed and turned to black and white. I think with little children, it's the eyes and the face that are adorable and I really want to capture them. I want to give the mum some photos that not any old person can take, you know? Does anyone have any tips for me, please? I really appreciate your help :)

Try to get him when he can't see the camera. Sit him down with a toy and wait until he is completely focused on it...
If you want to be on his level, just lay down next to him as he starts to play. He'll probably look at you for a few minutes, but after he realizes you're just laying with him as he plays, he'll go back to playing. Then when he's totally focused on the toy, capture that winner!
I find candids of children always capture them the best. =D
I hope I've helped some.

i know what you meant by it, but the title struck me as you wanting to kidnap children.....it made me laugh because it was ridiculous.
also, more seriously, staying farther away and using a telephoto lens is useful if you're looking to get candid shots. and being on the same level as them as virginia suggested is also a good tip.

capturing toddlers
shooting children
it's funny how we photogs talk LOL
those that don't live in our world would think we are barbarians hahaha
check out some of my hubby's pics of our kids
granitbiscut
he has an interesting style.... it's mostly by chance and have to take a bunch but the results are cool
he holds the camera down below them and shoots upward... he's good at it.... i'm not... worth a go though
i like the telephoto approach myself

LisaSam67 - I've tried that approach actually, it makes for a nice photo I must agree.
Thanks for the tips everyone. I shall put them to use :)
