hey guys,
im planning to buy a nikon d300 sometime soon..but i was thinking of buying just the body and then buy a good separate lens..what would you recommend? i like taking photos of people (somewhat like photojournalism) and a some landscapes as well..is there a lens in which it can take both very nicely? well if not, what lens do you usually use for photojournalistic shots?

I have a Tamron 18-200 which serves my purposes but its not really up for "photojournalistic shots" as its a slow lens.I like it though and its worth every penny.
It seems a shame to place a cheaper lens on a D300, but if your budget is stretched then go for it.You can always raise iso to reduce blurred images while out and about, especially with the D300.
The Nikon 18-200 is still coming down in price and is a better all round lens. When it first appeared it was selling for almost twice what it is now.

the hubby just bought an 18-85 vr nikkor lens for his d300 (i got my 80-400 back YAY)
the lens cost around 800 USD and so far is working fantastically for landscapes and for the "people" pics he loves to take.
if you can avoid using a cheaper lens please do
i used to use the kit zoom lens from my D50 on my D300 and the quality leaves you wanting

so do you really recommend just to buy the body?
coz i was thinking, im not really going to be satisfied with the kit lens that comes with it..
i apologize for the noob question, but what's the 18-85 vr used for? 80 - 400?

80-400vr
this lens costs nearly 2 thousand USD
this eagle was quite a ways in.... this shot was taken zoomed in the whole 400mm
without the VR on the lens this shot wouldn't have worked so well
it was almost that far away when shot with the 80-400 lens

nice shots Lisa..
im probably wrong about the kit lens..well i was searching around and saw a d300 with a 18-135 mm lens (i thought that's the kit lens -- come to think of it i don't even know what a kit lens is)...
saw a d300 with a 18 - 200mm VR lens, do you think this price is good?

I didn't know what one was either until someone here explained it once
it's a cheapy lens that sells with a camera body as a bundle
my D50 was purchased at Costco with two lenses - they are lower end nikkor lenses and they worked well while i was learning but now that i shoot with high end stuff oh boy can i see the difference
for what i needed at that time though it was perfect
and now my children use the d50 set up and it's great for them at this stage you know
was the D300 you saw at a store or is it used.... I can't imagine a camera shop selling a cheapy kit lens with the d300 so it might be worth looking at you know.... might be an in store selling gimmick and nothing wrong with that at all

just looked at that link
i have no idea of the reputation of that seller but the price looks good for it
i also am not sure about the individual price of that particular lens
i paid for my d300 brand new in the box at a camera store in my town
1899.00 USD
I'd say that's a HUGE discount on that lens maybe but i'm not sure.... research the lens maybe
sorry i can't be more help.... gotta run - will look in on this thread tomorrow

that's where i bought my d40 last year..they've a very good reputation..i was thinking, either i buy it from them or from amazon..amazon's a little more expensive though..and you don't get a free mem card (which is a big help btw)..
the individual lens is sold at 669.99 from buydig, 679.95 from amazon, 749 from ritz..
if you buy it with the body the price goes down $100 more..
thanks for the link pondy!

yeah ill probably get it next month..im excited!
btw, what's the lens hood for? do i really need it?
|
| LisaSam67 PRO Wed 4th Jun 2008 16:55
|
oh yes
it cuts down on sun glare hitting the lens
if indoors and using the on board flash though... be sure to take it off so you don't get flash shadow in the bottom of your pics
after you add a speedlight to your goodie bag you won't have to worry about the hood staying on though as the flash will be far above your camera body
