Having plumped for a D200 and found it to be a splendid camera, I am now not over-enamoured of the 18-70mm Nikon lens and thinking of a replacement.
Now most people seem to use the 18-200mm lens as a stay on, do everything tool, but I am wondering whether to get one of the more expensive Nikkor lenses, or go for the new 16-85mm.
Any Nikonians out there got an idea what's best?

I'm a little surprised that the 18-70 isn't cutting it for you. I've heard others say the same thing, but I absolutely love mine.
You might consider the 18-200, I know several folks like that one, I would probably go with the 50-200 VR that is less than $200USD - it's a steal and Popular photography really liked it. you could add the 18-55 to that vr or not

The 18-200 is definitely better than the 18-70.
But then so is the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 and I'd bet the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is too.
The only way up from the 18-200 quality wise and in the useful range of the zoom is the 17-55 f2.8, tres' expensive, +/- £850
I wouldn't use the 50-200 as a general lens as it becomes a 75-300 on a cropped sensor, and you'll be forever walking backwards into things.

Have a look at www.photozone.de for their views on the 16-85 and the 18-200, if you haven't already!

I also found that the 18-70 is a pretty good lens, even on my D2Xs, but i've heard that the image quality does vary from lens to lens, so maybe we've got a good version?

Granitbiscut just bought his first lens this weekend....
AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1:3.5-5.6 GED
has VR and takes a very crisp rich in detail picture
we did some comparison shots with my 17-70mm sigma macro zoom and his new one
his pic of course is a tad bit wider than mine and the details and colors are definitely a step up but I'm not giving up my ability to get right on top of my subject... he has to be 1.5 feet away
but HEY... I got my 80-400mm lens back!!!!!!!! YAY

Anyone use the Tokina 16-50 f2.8? It gets good reviews and appears to have good construction for its' intended customer bracket.

I think that is the case - I've seen this type of situation for almost 40 years - a run of mediocre with a smattering of really good ones.

Thanks all for taking time to even think about my predicament. My Tokina arrives tomorrow.
So up for sale will go my 18-70, and probably the 18-200 that some dodgy bastard sold me on e-bay that doesn't focus properly- but "was OK when he posted it".

Wow! What a beast of a lens, it's massive and, true to form the weather has gone crappy just when I want to go out and take some test shots. Initial results look promising though.
