A few of you are aware I am on a 7 1/2 month world trip which leaves Auckland on 5th April first stop Chile.
I may have to ask some advice occasionally about somewhere or give an update. I felt a bit guilty hi-jacking DragonSpeed's Europe thread for an England question so I'll start my own
One general question to start perhaps ...
I will be taking photographs on my trip obviously (although I will try not to get obsesssed with it and let it get in the way of a good holiday). I'm taking a laptop and my initial thoughts were to download photos ... sort through for keepers resize them a bit and download onto two disks post one back periodically and keep one with me ... may get someone to check at home the photos are ok then reuse the disks .. Not the best on computers and things so still working out what a CD -R and DVD - RW are as far as disks go !!
I will have 2 x 2 GB memory cards for DSLR and a 2GB card for my other digital camera
Bill kindly sent me a link to I-drive storage .. but I didn't get that far looking into it, not sure how that would work while on the road from laptop ?
Any thoughts about what others have done on longer holidays would be of interest.

1) Do you have internet access on the trip?
2) Do you have a non-laptop PC at home?

There's a nice application called "Foldershare" If you have a PC with you logged in somewhere, you can use Foldershare at night to sync your images back to that. When I travelled China, I had my home PC running and the laptop would sync to it when I plugged in at the hotels.
Just a thought.

Thanks .. Worth the thought, and handy for others but no good for my circumstances.
I think the double disc trick may have to be it .. my laptop allows me to use the 4.7GB DVD discs so thats handy

Hi Roger,
I always take my portable hard drive, a 40GB Epson. Upload at the end of every day and do a bit of editing as you go. That's for three week trips though and I imagine you will be amassing thousands of images on a trip such as this...you could always upload to FT and then copy them back off when you get home.

I suppose a new Pro account would be an option and just bulk upload .. didn't really think of that ... lots of time needed ? and I guess although I will have internet access on a semi regular basis I would be paying for it at various plces..may get expensive ?

Get a whack of 1GB cards. (About 60 sounds like it might be good)
Daily: Download contents to laptop.
Weekly: courier card home/to a friend from where you are.
When you get home, you'll have a copy on the card waiting for you.

Thanks Brian
Discs would be more cost effective wouldn't they ? The 4.7 GB DVD ones cost a couple of bucks here. I tried yesterday and works for my laptop
Was going to send them home weekly or less often
Just realised, I suppose this particular part of the thread would have been better off in the "Tips' area

DIscs, while more cost effective, are more fragile. Your call though, ultimately.

Thanks CP .. I can't remember The TV series .. or perhaps I am in denial ... but I do here it is a fascinating place , I think Harlech isn't to far away either ... tentatively two nights in that area .. Will research over places of interest closer to the time, any thoughts off the top of the head

I think Dvd's are the way to go. Make sure you have a hard cover for them. If I was you I would make 2 copies especially if you are sending them home. Before deleting them off you laptop (if you are going to do that) make sure you can retrieve them of your DVD. I did that once and lost a lot of photo's. But it has worked since. I really want to carry your bags. Have a great time.
