I heard there was a new canon 450D about to be released. At the moment I am using the 350D and I like that because it's lightweight and easy to use. If I decide to splurge on a new camera [wel it is my birthday this month] then I was trying to decide between this and the 40D. The only thing that worried me about that was when I tried the 20D it was really heavy and bulky. Any thoughts anyone?

If weight is the thing I'd get the 450D. The main thing I dislike about my D200 is the weight. I do like the strength though.. and after I beat the mugger to death with it I'll be able to take my own crime scene photos because it won't break.. but I wish it were lighter..

LOL....I hadn't actually considered the whole mugger/crime scene issue....puts a whole new slant on it

If you've been using the 350 happily, the 450 is probably more suited. The 40D is more or less the same size as the 20D.

I guess if I had the lightweight camera but keep the old tripod I could probably batter any muggers with that.
I do like the 350 and it works well for me. Quite fancied the idea of a sensor that cleans itself as mine is filthy, plus the camera is quite dented now.

Thats the trouble though when you take photos of the river all the time and then go scrabling over rocks. Doesn't do your camera much good!! Besides, we are talking birthdays here.

the 40D is a very nice camera... nearly as nice as my 5D hehe.. on the weight front, you get used to it and its not a problem, although i carry it in my camera bag and remove when needed far to weighty to carry round the neck for long periods of time for us girlies unless you want a neck like a sumo wrestler

I jumped from the 300d to the 40d. Never liked the small grip on the 350d or 400d.
For me the 40d was more obvious because it shares the same battery as the 300d and also the CF card (unlike the 450d)
Question is only, why you want a new camera? Is there something you can't do now on the 350d that you can on a new 450d or 40d?

40D gets my vote - if you're moving to the world of digital SLR it's always better to go with a sturdy body and the 450D is so light it almost feels hollow which throws the weight right off when you put a lense on it !

Canon 40d is the professional machine, Canon 450d is the entry photos machine, if you give a lot of money I think you get Canon 40d.

It's all about the lenses if you're not looking for a particular feature that one camera has and the other doesn't. :)

with no job right now the camera purchase has had to go on hold. So am sticking with the 350 at least until I am fit enough to use a camera again. Right now the weight would concern me a bit, but perhaps once I'm better...thanks for all your messages and advice though. I think the better camera is probably the 40D I was just intrigued by the cleaning system of the 450 which mine doesn't have and cleaning out the muck all the time can be a bit of a chore!!

The 40D has the same cleaning system as the 450.
