I think the problem is that I deleted all my photos from July & they now have to pick all the second best photos :))))))

Ah, now I see the reason. So that's July covered, what about August? Departure of Mmmstreaker? Lazy management...

I didn't post any good photos in August.

Two little questions.
1) Why in the photos of the month of September there are photos uploaded in August and in April?
I don't understand the sense of this!
2) Why among the winners there are often the same names?
Why FotoThing don't give the same opportunity to other users?
Thanks.

Pasifae,
I\'ve asked the staff who select and judge the photo of the month to respond, expect an answer shortly.
I\'m launching a new COMPETITIONS & CONTESTS section on FT this morning. Once its working PRO members will be able to create their own competitions.

eggy, I'd love to see the response to the judging criteria too.
for a couple of years I have been amazed at some of the photos selected, and the exclusion of some extraordinary ones

All said.................nobody understands it....i guess pictures are picked at random , with no criteria at all , in a hurry , just to make us happy........maybe not , but thats what it looks like......

I'm afraid it was just a simple human error that 2 of the photos were not from September. A couple of changes were made at the last minute. We were looking at a selection of them in each category and assumed in this case that the first one in the list we had compiled was the most recently uploaded but it was not.
Please accept our apologies, we will double and triple check this next time!
As for having more than one entry from the same person, this is not a competition and as such has no rules on this subject. We created it as a feature for the newsletter as we thought it would be a way of showing you all what great pictures there are on the site. We do look all through the site at as many users as possible whether PRO or non-PRO and just bookmark the ones which catch our eye the most.
The best way to get your photo seen is to tag it, especially if it falls under one of the categories in Photos of the Month.
Sorry if we have caused offence by doing this, it really wasn't our intention.
Thanks,
Fotothing.

we had this problem a while back with people getting narky about the featured photographs... im not sure why so many get het up about this to be honest! like FT said its not a competition .... its just a nice added feature!
surely we are all here to learn from each other and to enjoy photography? not to gain credit for our pictures but to share them and hear others thoughts on them... this is one of the things that separates FT from many other photo web sites (the relaxed sharing nature)

The new PHOTO COMPETITIONS section we launched yesterday is an attempt to fix some of the 'problems' with the PHOTO OF THE MONTH.
As with all of the changes we've made to FT since june we start slowly, fix bugs and then keep adding features until we get it right. Some of the changes coming to competitions :
* PRO members will be able to create their own competitions.
* At the moment you can only nominate your own photos. Shortly you will be able to nominate other peoples photos.
* FT staff judge the winners. Before the end of the year you will be able to vote yourselves.
* PRO members who create their own competitions will be able to decide on the rules, number of entries, and how the winner(s) are selected.
Next month (or maybe the month after ...) the PHOTO OF THE MONTH competition will be moved into the new PHOTO COMPETITIONS section. You'll be able to nominate photos in the categories and pick your own winners. We'll keep an eye on any voting systems to stop people getting up to mischief.
Hopefully moving PHOTO OF THE MONTH away from FT STAFF and giving FT MEMBERS more control will sort out.
re. Featured Photos - there are an estimated 4,500 photos to be added to the featured photos section. ETA is about a month. At the moment we only include photos of certain sizes else they would break the design of the front page.

oh one last thing about the featured photos...
When I've added the C.4.5k featured photos in, If a photo you like is missing, tag it as 'featured', it will be brought to my attention. The selection criteria / methods aren't perfect and there are > 1.7 million photos to choose from!

Just a short note.
Like Bill, I have been following the selection for the past number of years. In general, I have no problem with the selections and believe that the selected photo's are truly deserving of the attention.
However, I have kept a little mental tally, and have discovered that of all the selected photos, the great majority are from members in Europe and East of there, and not many from the western part of the world. I would estimate the ratio to be about 80-20% geared towards Europe and east of Europe. I have no idea if this has anything to do with time differences:), or if this reflects the demographic of FT memberships.

Not sure I like the idea ... generally I don't have a problem with POTM section apart from the delays .. which you know assure us have been fixed.
I fully back genese's comments about not wanting to see FT turn into a popularity contest ... if members are voting i can't fail to see how this will happen. I'm 100 % behind FT choosing the POTM (heck they have actually chosen one of mine !!!! and I'm on the bottom of the world John so they do get some geographical variety ). I can see the proposed change creating divisions and voting blocks ... don't like the idea at all.
Maybe I'm wrong but it would be a small proportion of FT members that would bother to vote every month and the same people intentionally or un-intentionally would usually favour a friend if it came down to the wire, that doesn't even start to consider the many "multi-personalities " out there.

I agree with you 100% Roger.
I would hate to see the same thing happen here that is so prevalent on other sites where voting has been introduced.
Such systems always without exception turn a site into a popularity contest, the.... I'll vote for you if you vote for me... mentality always comes into play.
I'm not at all happy about that kind of situation developing here on Fotothing.
I also had my photo chosen for photo of the month this time….it was my photo that was posted in April, it had been linked in the funfriday theme recently because I didn’t want to interrupt my wedding series of pictures, that is why it came to the for once again and for no other reason.
I fail though to see the relevance of the posting date, no matter when an image is posted here it is no guarantee that was the date it was captured in camera, there are new images posted here all the time that are years old...!
I didn’t ask to be chosen….it isn’t a contest….someone just decided they liked my photo, and I was quite pleased by that honest encouragement… Thanks to the person/persons who chose it.
No matter the system used there will always be sour grapes from someone, simply because they were not themselves chosen…they would do well not to take it all so very seriously, it’s supposed to be about having fun here and supporting each other in this wonderful hobby we all share. I know that I always try to help others here whenever I’m asked or whenever I can. :-))
Meg.

maybe additional to the photo of the month maybe a best improved photographer section could be added for those that want a contest .... with a voting system which would encourage those learning!
Then Photo of the month can be a FT choice and "Improved" Voted ?
then surely everyone would be happy lol.... yeah right! but it may go a long way to help?

I think that a voting system will ultimately create problems.
My previous comment was just that, a comment about an observed pattern.
However, I have no problem with the current selection process.
Let FT make the decision!!!
