Try calibrating your monitor, that might help. It sounds as though you are not seeing a true likeness of the file. If you have Adobe Photoshop or Elements, you will probably find you have a little program in your "Control Panel" called Adobe Gamma, which is a simple calibrating tool. Another problem may be that the software you are using is using a different colour space setting from your monitor. For example if you are using SRGB as the colour space in Photoshop, and something different for your monitor settings... then what you see is not what you will get. Yet another problem may be the printer set up using a different colour space from the one used in the software. In Photoshop (sorry, that's what I use and know) go to "File" ... choose "Print With Preview" and have a look at the settings in the little window that opens. In the options box change it to "Let Photoshop Determine Colours" and make sure that the colour space setting is the same as the one used in Photoshop. That could help...

Other common causes... using cheap inks can change the colours on printing, as can the type of paper used...

Welcome to the wonderful world of printer/monitor calibrating! There is a device called a "Spyder" which does the calibrating for you... if you know someone who has one you could maybe borrow it?
